There’s no one in your life quite like your mum. Whether it’s a shoulder to cry on, a shopping partner to call on, a cheerleader to support you, arms to collapse into or someone to share good news with, there’s no end to the list of roles a mother can effortlessly step into.
I think most of us don’t want to imagine what we would do without our mum but with daily stresses and the pressures of a busy life, how many of us take time out to really let her know we care? How easy is it to let her sacrifices go unappreciated or to forget to tell her we love her? How often do we think of the many trials and tribulations we’ve put her through as a son or daughter? Those terrible toddler tantrums, those misguided mistakes, those teenage strops and those endless struggles and decisions we call upon her for now we’ve made it to what we thought would be ‘easy adult life’?
Of course we’re all biased but as mums go, I think I got the cream of the crop. If you know Jools you’ll know she’s the kindest soul with the biggest heart coupled with a devilish sense of humour. The strongest woman I know: one who’s fiercely brought up two children, one who everyone calls on and depends on and one who relentlessly protects and cares for her own. I’m lucky enough that I have a best friend in my mum and she’s my business partner too so I do see a lot of my mum – sometimes a little too much (joking, mum!) – but it was lovely to be able to take her along to an early Mother’s Day event to spend a bit of quality time together away from work.
Moonpig kindly invited us to a gorgeous Friday night event at Whitworth Locke to enjoy a chilled few hours of flower arranging, card making and cocktail shaking. I’m sure everyone is familiar with Moonpig, if not for their catchy TV advert jingle, so It was great to learn a little bit more about the company that dominates the personalised card market.
We arrived at the venue and we’re greeted with nibbles and canapes and a quick presentation whilst sat on a comfy beanbag before quickly starting our first activity – flower arranging! Mum and I were so excited to give this a go – we love anything pretty and Instagrammable – and we were presented with so many beautiful flowers to choose from to make our own custom bouquet. What was really interesting to learn was that Moonpig actually sell flowers…who knew?! You can order them just like you would from another flower company and they get delivered to your recipient’s door in now time. I think what really stood out to us was how expensive the flowers used looked and how gorgeous the (professional bouquets) were. They’re honestly stunning and you absolutely wouldn’t be disappointed ordering from Moonpig, despite not being known for their flower service.
We gave the flower arranging a good go and my mum’s bunch definitely outshone mine! It was so much fun to do and it was interesting to discover the formula to a good looking bunch which included working in odd numbers when picking flowers and a special way of securing them together.
Next up was card making and we got the opportunity to pose together in front of a green screen before choosing which background to superimpose ourselves onto. Despite having known of Moonpig for years, I’ve never actually ordered from them so it was great to see how easy it was to go through the process of customising and choosing your card. I personalised a special one for my mum when she wasn’t looking and it was delivered the very next working day – perfect!
Anyone who knows my mum well knows her worst nightmare is a massage. I know. It’s so weird. I can’t understand it is literally because my idea of heaven but she insists she hates being ‘mauled’ haha. Anyway, for that reason she decided to skip the incredible hand massage whereas I sat my bottom down straight away to have a moment of R&R after the strenuous effort of flower arranging. It was a blissful few minutes of peace and very much needed so thanks very much Moonpig!
Finally, we took our places for cocktail making. Now, I’ve done this a few times before and my mum and I actually took part in a cocktail making event a few weeks ago and weren’t too skilled at it but we were excited nonetheless. As expected, it was brilliant although we didn’t escape the spills we knew we’d be responsible for! We made three delicious classics and even took part in a timed competition so it really was a giggle-filled way to end the night.
